About Athena
I read somewhere that a good question changes the story, that it has the power to disrupt patterns, and to transport us to new places. The power of a good question is what attracted me to therapy. Here, in the therapy room, questions are the tool by which most change is made; like a sculptor, each question gives way to new possibilities, constantly transforming the shape of the sculpture. Questions are bred through curiosity; they create a kaleidoscopic lens through which to view the person sitting across the room, and to look at all the individual, relational, and collective structures that have come together to bring that person here, in this moment. Curiosity asks rather than assumes, and allows us to challenge unworkable patterns and to explore new interpretations that can take our stories in a different direction.
I believe that the world deserves our authentic self, and I strive to remain authentic in my work as a therapist. This may mean incorporating humor, challenging and keeping clients accountable, or showing up to my own feelings in the therapy room.
Beyond my identity as a therapist, I am drawn to advocating for animals and for their rights. Someday, I hope to give more towards this cause. I also enjoy creating, and teaching myself simple and new things. I am generally drawn to slower living, and I love lazy days. Like all of us, there are days when I struggle with contradiction and uncertainty, and with the frustration that comes with these. But it is during those times that I learn the most about being human, and it is through those experiences that I am able to better connect with the experiences of my people and my clients.
How I Work
It is common when looking for a therapist to look for the disorders that they specialize in, and I am often asked what disorders or diagnoses I “work with”. The reality is, I do not work with any one disorder, nor do I strive to identify one before I begin my work with someone. Though diagnoses can at times serve as a useful guide for therapy, there is no chapter devoted to each client under a particular disorder that would shine a light on that person’s unique experience. My aim in the assessment phase and throughout therapy is to know a client as fully as possible, and to relate to the client as a person, not a disorder. That is, my goal is to create a new therapy for each client, and to collaborate with them as a fellow human.
No matter how much I study and learn, I will never be an expert in another’s life. But I do aim to learn as much as I can about emotions – their what, why, how. I hope to transform, whether in general or in your own life, the idea that certain emotions must be banished, and to hold a space that does not distinguish between good or bad emotions, but where each can be used and listened to, so that they can fulfill their purpose without taking over.
To me, any emotion you bring with you in a session is one that we can work with.
I always look to the science first. I have a particular interest in neuroscience, and believe that the more we understand our body and how it works, the better able we are to optimize our cognitive, emotional, and physical health. This can allow us to de-mystify and normalize some of the processes that cause us suffering, or that have been labeled “weak” or “abnormal”. When we begin to understand the intricate science behind our structure and the connections within us that “make stuff happen”, we can begin to use, rather than react to, our emotions.
Though I have strong foundations in cognitive-behavioral therapy I try to weave different parts of therapies and theoretical models depending on the unique characteristics and needs of each client.
